やさしい英語で本を楽しむ

子ども向けの本？が大好きで、５０代の今もときどき読んでいます。独学で英語の勉強をやり直し始めた時には、絵本から始まって（数々の素晴らしい絵本と出会えました！）、oxford bookworms のシリーズを50冊あまり読みました。

Books for children – I love them, and I still read them from time to time in my 50s. When I started to relearn English on my own, I started with picture books (and found many wonderful picture books!), and then read about 50 books in the oxford bookworms series.

この oxford bookworms ラダーシリーズは、語彙数を限定した７段階に分かれていて、無理なく楽しみながら読む力を鍛えられるようになっています。例えば、最初の starter シリーズは Headwords が250、一番上の Stage 6 は Headwords 2,500 となっています。やさしくリライトされているとはいえ、内容が世界の名作ですから面白くないわけがありません。個人的なおすすめを３冊ほど、、、

The oxford bookworms ladder series is divided into seven levels with limited vocabulary, so that students can train their reading skills while having fun without difficulty. For example, the first starter series has a limit of 250 essential words, and Stage 6, the highest, has 2,500. Even though the books are rewritten in an easy way, they are still masterpieces, so how could they not be interesting? Here are three of my personal recommendations…

１冊目は『エレファントマン』”The Elephant Man” です。レベル１で５１ページと短いですが、実話にもとづいたストーリーで心にぐっときます。デヴィッド・リンチ監督の映画もおすすめです。

The first book is “The Elephant Man”, a short 51-page level 1 story based on a true story that will touch your heart. I also recommend the movie directed by David Lynch.

２冊目は文豪チャールズ・ディケンズの名作短編『クリスマスキャロル』”A Christmas Carol”。レベル３です。私の説明など必要なしです。まだの方は是非。ちなみに Carol といえば永ちゃん・ジョニー大倉さんなわけですが、もともとは賛美歌の一種を表す言葉だとこの本を読みながら知りました。

The second book is “A Christmas Carol,” a short story by Charles Dickens. It is level 3. You don’t need my explanation. If you haven’t read it yet, please do. By the way, the word “Carol” is used for Ei-chan and Johnny Okura, but I learned while reading this book that it was originally used to describe a kind of hymn (a christian church song).

３冊目はフィリップ・K・ディックの『アンドロイドは電気羊の夢をみるか』”Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?” です。レベル５です。ファンの方はきっと映画『ブレードランナー』をご覧になったことでしょう。SFの名作！

The third book is “Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?” by Philip K. Dick. It is level 5. If you are a fan of this book, you must have seen the movie Blade Runner, a masterpiece of SF.

かつてジャパン・タイムズ社の伊藤サムさんが英語で読めるようになるにはやさしいものを大量に読むのが良いとおっしゃっておりましたが、私もそれを実践することでだんだん読めるようになり、現在は英語で読書することはそれほど苦ではなくなりました（辞書は手放せませんが）。これまでに読破した中で一番の大作は Ayn Rand の “The Fountainhead” 『水源』です。長かったー（７５０ページほど）。これを読んだときまだ邦訳が無かったのです。Ayn Rand はむしろ “The Atlas Shrugged”『肩をすくめるアトラス』で有名ですが、こちらはもっと長くて未読です。

Mr. Sam Ito of the Japan Times once said that the best way to learn how to read in English is to read a lot of easy books, and by doing that, I gradually learned how to read. The longest book I’ve read so far is “The Fountainhead” by Ayn Rand. It was long (about 750 pages). Ayn Rand is more famous for “The Atlas Shrugged,” which is much longer but I haven’t read it yet.

Recently, I was introduced to a wonderful series of books by a child I know.

イギリスの作家 Terry Deary の Horrible Histories シリーズです。

It is the Horrible Histories series by British author Terry Deary.

Terry Deary はこれまで330冊もの本を出版している有名作家で、中でもHorrible Histories は人間の歴史のさまざまなトピックを独特のユーモアを交えながら紹介してくれる超人気シリーズです。本を開いた途端に、おもしろエピソードあり、カートゥーンあり、クイズあり、あっという間に引き込まれて歴史好きになっているという感じです。子どもたちの心を惹きつけるものが詰め込まれています。私もすっかりファンになってしまいました。ちなみに本国イギリスではテレビ番組やゲームにもなっているようです。

Terry Deary is a famous author who has published 330 books so far, and Horrible Histories is a very popular series that introduces various topics of human history with unique humor. As soon as you open the book, you will be drawn in by the interesting episodes, cartoons, and quizzes, and you will quickly become a history buff. It is filled with things that attract children’s hearts. I’ve become a fan of it myself. Incidentally, in his home country of England, it seems to have been made into a TV show and a game.

良い児童書はいくつになっても楽しめる。というか年をとってから読んでも楽しめるものでなければ良い児童書とはいわないのでしょうね。ナルニア国物語の C.S.ルイスの言葉です。

A good children’s book can be enjoyed at any age. Or rather, a good children’s book is not a good children’s book unless you can enjoy reading it even when you are older. This is what C.S. Lewis, the author of The Chronicles of Narnia, said.
